Our telephone specialist has been specialising

old and vintage phones. Even the earliest of instruments
come lovingly restored and all but the odd early collectors
piece come with a 12 month guarantee in full working
order. Virtually any phone can be made to work in any
country and we will supply your phone with the correct
plug for your telephone socket. Telephones have proven an
excellent and functional investment over the years, and,
for example, the last dial phones used in Britain (the 700
series) are now also beginning to appreciate rapidly. We
currently have (diminishing) quantities of most of our original
phones, so why not make an investment we are sure you are

A piece of telephone nostalgia: the Speaking
Clock
Known officially as Timeline and more commonly as plain
TIM, the speaking clock was first introduced in 1936 in
London at Holborn Exchange. The Post Office had held a competition
to decide on the voice to be recorded, and subscribers dialing
TIM would hear the 'golden voice' of Miss Jane Cain, a London
telephone operator, giving the Greenwich time correct to
one-tenth of a second. A competition to find a replacement
for Miss Jane Cain's voice for the Speaking Clock was won
by Miss Pat Simmons, a supervisor in a London telephone
exchange. She made her recordings in 1963 - listen to this
familiar sound
clip. She was to be heard until Mr Brian Cobby replaced
her in 1985 - remember this sound
clip? Incidentally, many years earlier, in 1965, Brian
recorded a familiar voice-over, in an American accent, that
went, " Five, Four, Three, Two, One." It was for Gerry Anderson's
