Jaques is THE name in chess - they invented the modern style
chess pieces with Howard Staunton, a leading Victorian British
player. Consequently, Jaques is the only company able to
call its chess sets "Staunton Chess Sets" - everyone else
has to call their sets something like "Staunton-Style" Chess
Sets. Jaques produces not only great-quality tournament
sets, but also limited edition sets that are the type of
chess sets to become treasured family heirlooms. What generally
distinguishes expensive sets from cheaper sets is the quality
of the carving, the size of the king, the materials chosen,
and the weighting. The differences in carving are usually
most evident if you look at the Knight. The SAC Premium
sets, especially the Ultimate Staunton-Style Chess Set is
particularly well finished and is one of our favourite sets. The intrinsic value of a chess set usually relates to the pieces, rather than the board - therefore we recommend you choose the pieces first, and the board afterwards (we sell both separately). Be a little bit cautious of complete chess sets (ie pieces and boards sold together) as you will often find that the pieces are of inferior quality. A notable exception to this rule are the top Jaques limited edition sets, which come with limited edition specially made boards - in these cases, the value of the set is enhanced because the board was made for the set - the two are worth more together than separately.

Hiqh quality chess pieces used to be made from Ebony and Ivory. Jaques produced their last ivory set in the 1930s. Since then, boxwood has taken over. The best sets are made from Ebony and Boxwood. Cheaper sets use lower quality box wood and substitute the ebony for either rosewood, or boxwood, which is stained to a darker colour.
More recently, themed chess sets have become popular, enabling you, for example, to re-enact famous historic battles. The latest addition to our chess set range is outdoor chess, which can be played all year round, and is ideal for family gatherings or public events.
